Guns are an interest to millions of Americans. I think it's easy for people that don't like them to try to get them banned. But what I don't see is any sort of self-reflection on the side of the ban artists. Are you willing to give up a woman's right to choose in order for guns to be prohibited? I can't say that I am... Would you give up gay marriage if it meant that the second amendment were repealed? (Not sure if repealed is the correct word in this context. Not a man of law.)
If there's a malaise on the US political system, it's this notion that we aren't sharing a collective ownership interest over the most powerful nation on Earth, instead we're arbitrarily assigned to one of two ill-fitting ideologies based on our top priorities the same as living in a certain city obligates you to be emotionally invested in their local sports teams, no matter how shitty. Abortion rights and gun ownership are different issues to be examined individually on their own merits, not interchangeable poker chips divvied between team red or team blue. Anyhow, why are some people starting to say, "let's get rid of all the guns like Australia?" Because of the NRA. Because they treat every single gun control measure, from closing the gun show loophole to trigger locks, as an all or nothing slippery slope. Well people are getting fed up with doing nothing in the face of massacre after massacre and saying, "fine, if it's an all or nothing game, we want all."
