Re: Review Request: Wizardry 8

If it's the Wizardry that begins with you battling crabs on a beach before you wander into a "makes Quake 1 look like Halflife 2" dungeon to battle bats, then I'd say ignore the stupid fucking piece of shit because it starts off awful and doesn't get better,
Yeah, that's it pretty far, but I think it's getting better.
and bullshit happens only after you spend hours upon hours rerolling your characters in the hopes of getting halfway-decent stats.
Here I think you're substituting the Wizardry for the SNES. I'm having fun with the game. Pretty much all the NPCs are completely voiced, the included voice packages aren't completely stupid either. It's slow, and I think that's just what anyone with half a brain associates with "oldschool rpgs". There is a little mod to speed it up. You can go up to 5x the normal movement speed before they look retarded. I like the story, of course it's not all kinds of character development, going on Boo's dual class quest, or a bunch of "[Force Persuasion] Suck my dick". It plays like an old game and it's just not for everyone. There just enough honest to god dungeon crawls, puzzles, and other various shit to keep me hooked. As for everyone going crazy about character creation, well, they're nuts. Don't pick anything with negative stat points. Right click on all the stats and skills to figure out what the hell they do, you would think your warrior should go to dex after strength and vitality, but you didn't figure out what the stats do then! When leveling up anything but a mage just pick 3 skills and lean on them. Skills rise through use so you're not going to be horribly left behind. That's all you need to know. Lords suck and Bards rule. The battle system is pretty straight forward, since it's in 3d it requires that you have someone to guard your flank so all your wussies can't be directly attacked. Sometimes it just gets really frustrating so here's the next thing you really should have an item editor. Go ahead, put your guys forward a few levels, ran out of resurrection powder? Give yourself some more! There are enough RPG masochists who want to play through Bloodlines with one 'death = restart' running through their minds, you're not one of them! The game does feature an "Iron Man" mode with saves only when you exit the game, which is absurd. There's a good game in there, if you're not uncomfortable with giving party a little Godly Intervention.
