It's honest, but took a decade for them to admit

the way big publishers treat game outlets as their marketing arms
Which all the big sites had no qualms about, and were complicit in (or ignorant to allow?). Nobody inside was willing to expose.
a mostly unsustainable career that many people just see as a path to PR
Because they weren't accredited journalists and worked directly with PR depts. Most of that was probably legit to get pre-release info, but there's also greasy kickbacks. It's only been openly talked about in recent times after outsiders started turning over rocks. Moral panic burn out, plus the sinking of Gawker helps too.
Is this a common alternative avenue to vidya game journalists?
Depends. Bloggers are generally networked with PR firms via a partner, or more directly with a publisher. You'd expect to see them fall into advertising, social media or community managers role. However, if it's somebody from Kotaku or Polygon then it's more awkward to go into an interview given the fact that they probably straight up shit all over on the hard work of people in the industry for a clickthrough.
