This wasn't a moral decision, it was a political one.
Excuse me for sperging out and thinking you weren't being rhetorical when asking, "What are they thinking?" Obviously in a political vacuum I don't think Franken's butt-grabs are at the same level as Roy Moore's child predation, and he has definitely been an asset to the Democratic party in the past, but right now every time he appears on the news he toxifies the Democratic brand and dilutes the outrage over Moore's creeping. To be honest, I'm kind of ambivalent about this move. We won't really know if this was the right decision until Wednesday morning.
Do you think Anthony Weiner should have resigned?
Well it's funny you chose that example. The first time he got in trouble for sexting, I thought absolutely not. I was outraged at the time and was making jokes about how only Republicans are allowed to have erections without having to resign from office in shame. But it turned out we didn't have the full story at the time. Holy shit, he kept getting caught sexting again and again. It lost him his seat in the senate, it ruined his mayoral bid, it lost him his wife, he couldn't resist sexting even when his child was asleep in bed with him, and eventually it landed him in jail. I used to think sex addiction was a myth before Weiner's downfall. And biggest of all, Anthony Weiner's sexting addiction directly led to President Trump. Because it was the investigation of his latest sexting case, this time with an underage girl, that lead to the Comey letter. Maybe those Democrats who at the time we said were cowardly and disloyal by calling for Weiner's resignation knew some details about Weiner's sex life that were kept from the public to give him a chance to save face. Likewise Al Franken was part of Saturday Night Live in the 70s. If even half the backstage stories about the show at that time were true, grabbing butts were likely the least of the skeletons lurking in Franken's closet.
