How is firing an L9 at Google ALLOWED OR TOLERATED???
You can't "just fire" an L9! YOU WILL REGRET THIIIIIS!
filereaper 1 day ago | root | parent | next [–] Because most L9's at Google have created significant contributions to the industry, these are folks like David Patterson (created RISC), Rob Pike (created Golang) etc... Foundational work that affects Google's bottom lines but also the rest of the industry. Its this work done earlier that even allowed these glorified managers to be employed and have their ridiculous salaries. Its frankly shocking that some VP+ can come in and fire a Distinguished Engineer. Its the equivalent of pissing on the shoulder of a titan. Totally deplorable that this is allowed or tolerated. reply
L9s are wizards and why are you EVEN performance reviewing them? They cast the invisible spells that keep the Google working.
dekhn 22 hours ago | root | parent | prev | next [–] Why are you even performance reviewing an L9? That's sort of missing the point. For all you know, their contributions could be profound and subtle and totally invisible to you and many others, while still having massive impact. reply
How could a wizard possibly get fired? Think about it, maaan. Only if he WANTED to get fired. (taps forehead.)
medellin 1 day ago | root | parent | next [–] People might also be forgetting that they might have asked to be laid off. I had a person do this a few years ago when one of my high performers told me they were leaving soon and wanted a comp package so they could take a vacation and still get paid. reply
I know I chose this particular comment, but there are a lot of other comments saying the same thing. People really want to believe that that L9 left voluntarily. But some vile troll has the audacity to ask what an L9 even is?
tannhaeuser 1 day ago | parent | prev | next [–] WTF is a L9 distinguished software engineer? Is it below or above L9 operating thetan? A guild navigator? reply packetslave 1 day ago | root | parent | next [–] It's near the top of the individual contributor (ie. non-manager) job ladder. L5 = senior L6 = staff L7 = senior staff L8 = principal engineer L9 = distinguished engineer L10 = fellow None of these are titles that Google invented, btw. reply
[The Narrator: All of these were titles that Google invented.]
