I may have to give my boss real credit here

I got an email shortly after I got back from being sick. It was from HR saying I had been selected for random drug testing. I could still hardly get around my house much less leave it so I pretty much ignored it. Also it pissed me off, I haven't had to do something like that in 25 years. Later I got an email asking if I went. No I didn't, I replied, I've been very sick and just got out of the hospital. Now, I had skimmed the email looking for a due-date or something. I missed that I was supposed to go WITHIN 30 MINUTES of getting the email. It's bananas. I wonder if they'll wait a week and then send me another one. Good times.
A decent boss uses what happened here to tell HR to knock it the fuck off and leave you alone and if you have a problem with it, let's get on a call and sort it out. I would guess your dude has no idea this happened . "Within 30 minutes," god, they can eat a bag of shit within 30 minutes.
He basically set our own policy for the department and told HR that's what we're doing. But HR is still pissed at me and wants a meeting, so he called me to say "let's be contrite and tell them it won't happen again, and basically get them to leave us alone". That's fine, and I appreciate calling me ahead of time. I should emphasize that this email totally blindsided me. Nobody, from HR to management to other colleagues, had ever mentioned this. I'm sure it was in the handbook I e-signed but there was zero communication about it. Also, I was pretty fucking sick that day -- Sat and Sun were two of the worst days for me -- it took me three hours to finally take my pills, for example. Get out of bed, get water, open pill bottles . . . everything was a struggle. So I was surprised to be upright at my desk on Monday (the day this BS was sent) for as long as I was.
