The simplest kind (found on many trucks) has open differentials in the front and rear axles. If one side of the vehicle loses traction entirely, the system won't send power to the other side. In other words, put both of your right tires in a muddy ditch, and you're stuck, even if both of your left tires are still on dry pavement. In the same situation, a FWD or RWD car with a limited slip differential would be able to free itself.[/quote]
