Re: fencing!

Say what you like about those dudes, but you can't accuse them of never getting out of the house. General critics of dorkiness so seldom have such an active social life.
Or maybe they just can't stand the smell?
I took a D&D DM from work out to dinner the other night; when I got to his place he was still in the middle of fencing practice, in the middle of the apartment complex parking lot, with a couple of his buddies. This balding, reclusive, antisocial dork has buddies. And fencing practice! Fucking A, I'm taking co-workers out to dinner and interrupting the DM's appointment schedule. His buddies were cool guys, too. :(
Fencers are the worst parts of preppies mixed with the worst parts of D&D fanatics. Show me a single fencer who does not constantly quote Monty Python & the Holy Grail. When they're not busy shouting "ni" and braiding each other's ponytails, they're getting into a huff whenever someone doesn't use the proper fencing term for something, whether it's calling the director a "ref", or "fighting" instead of bouting. And whatever you do, don't commit the most unforgiveable of faux pas and say "sword" instead of weapon (seriously, show up at any fencing practice and try this). That's not even getting into what are some of the most convoluted and arbitrary rules in all of sports. No wonder D&D people love it. It's for the Society of Creative Anachronisms people and "boffer combat" club members who are trying to cling to a shred of legitimacy. The morale here is that people who still play with swords past puberty are to be rightfully shunned.
No, you show me. I've never EVER seen anyone at the SCA or simillar groups do those jokes. The SCA takes itself pretty seriously, which is absurd for reasons that you don't mention here. Your experience seems to have been with people doing the actual sport of Fencing, which is not what those guys do. But of course, people with hobbies are by definition fools, so your hamfisted pronouncements are totally justified.
It's okay Laud, D&D will forgive you if you don't stick up for it.
