The figure proferred a small cube. Its unpainted wood surface was dark yellow, the grain prominent and jet-black: from age or genetics, he couldn't guess. On each face, in hand-hewn relief, stood a string of letters. He turned it over in his hands, slowly and then faster, as if it could be goaded into revealing the nature of its importance. His hands traded dirt with its surface and got the better deal. It looked like a child's block, grimy as the edges of grandad's playing cards, and unworthy of even the modest awe he'd decided to show. "Huh. It's a block." The response was amplified in the tight space. "No! Are destiny dice!" There was no second block, and the plural nature of the retort went unexplained. "Roll destiny dice! Name on dice take your place!" "Roll destiny dice!" <i>"Roll destiny dice!"</i> Jizzy stared at the die. The figure began to chant in English, a thousand-year-old tongue: &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<i>"I've read three books for each one that you've seen!"</i> Jizzy's fingers closed over the block. Far above the well, the sky grew dark. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<i>"I've toured three towns for each one where you've been!"</i> Jizzy cocked his hand. Lightning flashed. A few raindrops found their way down the well. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<i>"I've discarded three coupons for each one you've redeemed!"</i> Jizzy waited for the second half of the couplet. The horses grew agitated. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<i>"I've touched three titties for each one you've dreamed!"</i> Screaming, he threw the die. His eyes were manic.
