IIRC, Mcclain's wife has a conversation with Gruber near the end where it's revealed that they're not terrorists and that Hans isn't really German? I think it went down something like She:"After all that posturing - you're nothing but a common thief." Hans: "I am an EXCEPTIONAL thief - and since I'm moving up to kidnapping you could show a little more respect."
