Everything from the electoral college to a constitution that can't be changed by a simple majority make it different from an actual democracy, like Britain. That is why, for instance, recall votes and plebiscites are constrained to the state level, rather than at the national level: the layering structure of a republic exists to moderate the extremes. Like I said, it's a pity about the whole direct election of senators thing, as that was a crippling to the federal nature of our republic by supplanting state (legislature) powers with mobocracy.[/quote]
