Re: Checking in

Toronto is like 90% powered right now, with a fresh brief blackout that rolls through every couple hours. I would've liked to use my computer today, but the office building is inexplicably locked tight and the keycard doesn't work anymore. Hooray for technology. So I'm over at my dad's house, using my sister's computer, which got me well acquainted with the Blaster worm and how to get rid of it.
Whoa, yeah, the blaster worm. Love it. Our awful corporate AV (which I'm responsible for, sadly) doesn't work on XP. I'm working on remedying that. In the meantime, the 4 people at my company who have XP got infected. Then I guess this thing sends network packets to a specific port to shut off the rpc in Windows 2000 and XP machines even if they aren't infected. Fortunately, the sum total of all machines at my company with 2k or XP is: 14. NT 4.0, which everyone else uses, is essentially unaffected. Let's hear it for obsolete OSes! That keycard thing reminds me of my last company, which had an awesome datacenter and noc onsite. It had a biometric hand scanner to enter. Well, one day (after I left) the power went out. Guess what wasn't hooked into the backup power? Fortunately the noc operator was awake and let everyone in. Considering that occasionally we'd find those guys asleep in their chair with some non-work-related website all over the huge plasmon screens, and considering the thickness and of the soundproof glass looking into the noc, it was a minor miracle. I could just imagine my coworkers banging on that glass, trying to wake the guy up, watching servers die one by one.
