Re: Settlers counter rebuttal

YES there are other ways to score points, but a lack of resources is a lack of resources, and once an opponent's road cuts yours off and isolates you then you're screwed. Ports? A tool for the already rich players that just happen to be short of one resource and can afford to trade in at a 3:1 exchange rate. There's no way someone who's behind is going to catch up like that.
I seem to recall that there were 2:1 ports, and if you were smart and built your early settlements appropriately, you could load up on any old resource you wanted. Whenever there WAS a resource shortage, it was more about who'd figure a way to route around it and/or using the scarcity of the resource as a bartering chip for future favours. Maybe your friends are just idiots?
There are 2:1 ports, although they are for a specific resource, and lining up the specific resource with what the random roles of the dice give you an abundance of is tricky. I actually play this game a decent amount, and I have to agree with random dice rolls really hurting it. There aren't enough roles for everything to even out. We have one kid who builds his entire strategy on clustering around all the 10s or 4s or whatever and hoping that number is hot. He either has like 3 points at the end of the game or crushes us the times his number comes up a ton. Also, getting cities fast is key. Whoever can pull early ore has the best shot.
