Most arguments against nethack here are utter BS... BUT NOT ALL OF THEM!
I think nethack is the perfect example of FABIO's whole, "If it looks good on paper it will garner a rabid fanbase no matter how dull the actual game is" theory. There's so much stuff you can do! Yeah, but you have to learn a whole goddamn programming language just to do any of it, and most of it is just lame Monty Python references. A good analogy is Maximo. As far as I can tell, the main reason this game is considered to be so hard is 1. Puzzle Bosses and 2. you need to collect 100 koins just for the priviledge of saving every half hour or so. This in itself is manageable, you get at least 100 koins every level and can scare up about 40 next to the save point. But when you play the game it sucks. You'll come across inviting-looking gyroscopes with interesting items inside for a price... and not dare buy them. Maybe the alternate colored boxer shorts give you some sort of ability, maybe they're just cosmetic, but you'll never have the joy of finding out because you KNOW you'll have to keep 100 koins on hand unless you want to risk having to play for an hour or two longer than when you stopped having fun. This crappy feature has 2 effects: It makes the game less fun and more of a chore AND it gives it this super-duper diffucult HARDCORE reputation that brings nerds out of the woodwork announcing, "YOU R NOT 133+ ENOUGH FOR THIS GAME! GO BACK TO QUAKE, FAGORT!!!!!!" Same thing with the annoying mandatory bullshit in Nethack. Are you also a fan of Space Empires IV?
