Re: Lets put Nethack on a list with classic arcade games!

Nethack provides a high score list for a reason, and the high score list is really the whole point of the game.
an example of a too-hard-to-save feature being appealing to dorks was given earlier, you've provided another, even gayer one. Tricking children into pumping more quarters into a machine that has the same blinking dots as every other game is why high scores were made. Geez, comparing your game to 20 year old dinosaurs and then failing, i feel for you.
Well, my example was gay, so I guess I'm forced to concede this point.

Tetris, Pac-Man, Asteroids, or any score-driven game wouldn't be fun if you could quicksave at any time and keep playing for hours without it getting too hard to play. Neither would Nethack.
they would also not be fun if they were frustrating and boring like another game i know but will not mention because i'm going to great pains to be sarcastic. People will be less likely to argue with you if you just precede every sentance with "i know its gay BUT" when talking about Nethack. -bM
i know its gay BUT you seem to be hung up on the fact that you don't like Nethack's gameplay, which I didn't even mention. If you can't get past ASCII graphics, identifying items, eating food, or any of the things I've heard mentioned, then yes -- you are not going to like Nethack, because last I checked, Nethack has all these elements. My point is that you would still hate the game even if it had a quicksave feature. Lack of quicksave is not the problem. i know its gay BUT, by the way, you CAN quicksave, if you just copy the save file it makes when you save/quit. However, I feel quicksaving entirely defeats the point of the game. The fun of the game is that sometimes you do well, sometimes you don't. Imagine playing poker for chips, except you engineer it so you always win. Now you've got all the chips. Wheeeeee! It's not like there's a gripping plot, or amazing cinematics. The challenge IS the game. Now follow this up with a snappy retort. Possibly questioning my sexuality.
