Re: Best Buy and phone numbers

We actually had this exchange on Sunday: (as I walk up to the counter, first thing out of his mouth is) Best Buy Guy: Can I get your phone number? Mrs. oK: Uh, no? BBG: It's just for marketing purposes, we don't sell them to anyone. Me: Yeah, you say that, but at 6:30 tonight, it's gonna be you guys on the phone: 'So, how those Muppet First Season DVDs treatin' ya?' BBG: That doesn't happen. Me: ... BBG: That doesn't happen! Me: I KNOW. I'm not telling you my phone number anyways. Mrs. oK: Can we just go? I don't want the DVDs anymore. BBG: The reason we do it is so that each store can tailor its merchandise to its locality, we don't sell the- Me: Can I just buy this? BBG: ... Us: ... BBG: Okay, that's (price). (I pay in cash and we start walking out) BBG: (resumes his spiel about how they don't sell the numbers. He is still talking as we go through the automatic doors.) The weird thing was this guy seemed genuinely offended that I didn't want to give the number up. WHY AM I BEING SO MEAN TO BEST BUY? THEY DON'T SELL THEM THEY JUST SOMETHING SOMETHING SOMETHING!! I suppose some people will always want to feel like they're good at their job, and so they feel a need to go beyond their actual duty, which is taking my money and shutting the hell up. The system breaks down if cashiers don't understand that they just operate a cash register.
I've always told them '99999999' - That's like hitting '0' in an automatic telephone system. About 90% of the time they don't even ask for an explanation and understand that you've said the secret word for 'Fuck off, junior, I'm not giving you my phone number'.
More likely they are too full of ennui to give a shit -/ES/-
