Monster Rancher 2 was ok
I had Monster Rancher for the PS, but as far as I'm aware it's actually called Monster Rancher 2 in the US, bloody Sony Europe and blahblahblah. It was good, in short bursts. And you can't actually get monsters from any disc you have until you get a license to revive them which was pretty annoying, especially as I was never good enough to stop my monster from dying before the big cup thing that lets you revive the best stuff (hint to developers: don't make a COMPULSORY game mechanic, like FIGHTING in a MONSTER FIGHTING GAME shorten your creature's lifespan to the point where you CANNOT COMPLETE THE GAME). The training things are a bit random as well, with your smart beast failing a simple intelligence regime for no apparent reason, but a kick in the face is an optional prize for failing such a task. The only way to cheat death is to save at every possible opportunity, and if your critter dies load it up, freeze the bastard and combine it with a younger, fresher monster (so get used to saving screen) I guess that doesn't really help you much though. The one on the GBA is ok too mostly because your monsters never die, they just get severely reduced stat growth so you should retire them, but when your critter is strong enough to get you the good stuff, there's no need. Well, until you want something cooler.
