I think Layne Staley gets a free pass.

goth ... Layne Staley and Billy Corgan
I guess I can buy Smashing Pumpkins being "goth" in the weepy and eyeliner end of their career, but Alice in Chains?!
I guess it's not "goth" in the purest sense. It's the commercialism of boo-hoo-I'm-so-goddamn-hurting-inside. "Down In A Hole" = "Disarm." It's a ploy. The point at which that whole angst-ridden self-hating vibe becomes obnoxious is the exact moment that the practitioner seems self-serving. Contrived. To a large degree, that whole thing is a product of 90's targeted-demographic marketing - they realized the disaffected kids had money to spend, so they nailed us. I didn't - and don't - like to feel like some suit with a focus group decided what record I would buy, and both of those bands made me feel that way. Back in the day. Now I'm in an age group that nobody cares about - we don't pay for our music. I'm sure there's some analogous band out nowadays, though. Note that both Smashing Pumpkins and Alice In Chains have good songs which I love. SP: "Glynis," "Drown," "Rhinocerous." Alice In Chains: "Would?" Those songs don't smack of crass the-kids-will-eat-this-up mentality.
