I'm sorry you are so haunted by your fears.

"Metal Gear Solid: not meant to be a stealth game" - Lizard King, game expert (moreso than "most people")
Metal Gear Solid: Much more than a stealth game. I can go with that, if that's ok with you, since that's what I actually said. As opposed to, say, Splinter Cell, where anything but stealth is punished and unworkable with the game mechanics. But I suppose you thought you were being stealthy when you chopped down hundreds of enemy troops in a pitched battle, right? This really comes down to you objecting to stealth as a genre period, except for possibly the much vaunted Thief for which everyone seems to have a nostalgia hardon when the subject arises. I agree with you to a point, which is why I think MGS's combination approach is the only way it can succeed. I think more actiony updates like that upcoming stealth game that promises fast paced judo chops and shit are the way to go, as well as MGS4's proto-insurgency approach (RIPPED FROM TODAY'S HEADLINES!).
Resident Evil never had a compelling enough atmosphere going for it to justify the spartan survival horror gameplay - aside from the "fresh for 1996" original - so they had to change something. The atmosphere? Fussbett's link to the early poor man's Silent Hill build told us that wouldn't have worked, so instead they ramped up the gameplay to "action". Resident Evil was more about zombie blasting than nuanced horror so it worked. If you can think of a way Silent Hill would be improved by turning it into an action game please do share. Personally I think the series is stagnating because they've been slacking on story and scares, not because there's no time attack mode.
Ah, nuance. Well, here's one for you. Not having a protagonist control like complete shit does not make a game an FPS. Killing you as a result of poor controls is not survival horror, it's lousy gamemaking. You may put up with it in SH (as opposed to the countless J horrors that you can't defend) because you like the story so much, but to pretend it is a feature is self delusion.
A brighter future than enjoying JRPGs that play the game for you?
No, that's pretty much the pinnacle of that genre. I fully expect upcoming FF's to be borderline action games with stats, and I can live with that.
