This is probably not what you wanted.

I'd like to tell you something you should consider interesting. I think it's a revelation but I'm yet to meet anyone who gives a shit, so please do me the favour. Our games have misled us about guns. Assault rifles are as inaccurate as computer game shotguns and, after 5 shots, hot as holding a frying pan through a teatowel. They're also nasty as fuck and stink like fireworks, especially the Russian ones. The guy getting shot by a K50 can't hurt much more than the guy shooting one. I iron sighted, prone, with maybe half my shots questionable but the other half theoretically dead on and landed two shots of thirty with an AK and a target at maybe 20m! I went through three magazines trying to figure out what I was doing wrong before realizing assault rifles are just shit. They're fucking shotguns. Do not fear them! And, my M60 (YOUR M60) jammed FOUR TIMES in a 50 round belt! I called it a "piece of American shit" to the Vietnamese guy tasked with righting it because it was quite embarrassing and he acts snotty like he built the thing. Whose fucking side were you on, nigger? The Vietnamese, BTW, are the worst people on earth. Worse even than Indians. That's the conclusion of my upcoming review of Asians. *spoiler*
You've got a number of possible issues there, from a shitty, poorly maintained old AK to a lack of lubrication (YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER) to crap ammunition. I'm sure knowing how to shoot well wouldn't hurt, but at 30m you should have no problem hitting a target in the standing position (let alone prone) with just the basics any shooter would know (eg don't jerk the trigger, don't flinch, slow steady squeeze, etc). The heat issues you indicate suggest there were a lot of things going on with that rifle, and the smell as well (bullets stink, but there's bad and then there's really bad). An AK47 that isn't fucked up is still notoriously inaccurate, but that means out at ranges above 100m at the very least, and above 300m for an experienced shooter. Compared to an M16, that's 300m for a average shooter and 500m if you're pushing it. The M60 was replaced as the squad automatic rifle by the m249, which has as its advantages weight and sharing 5.56 ammunition with the other small arms. As far as reliability it's supposed to have an excellent record, but that is (once again) going to be impacted heavily by shitty maintenance and bad ammunition. Linked ammunition can be a real pain in the dick.
Uzis are no better, but pistols are user friendly enough to recommend. The arms industry needs to sort it shit out and you soldiers need to whine more. Your guns are a fucking joke and I am very disappointed.
I expected to be disappointed by the performance of my personal weapon (first the m16, then the m4), but both worked really well for me. The biggest problems I had were with dirty magazines (the gun kind, jackasses) and the batch of defective mags that were recalled, and that's about it. My squad's m249s I could bitch about for days, but not the other two weapons.
