Funny you should mention that!

So, back in January, Valve made an announcement about their "Steamworks" service, which would give indie game developers a shitload of resources. Being of sound mind and body, I like Valve. They make good products, they don't seem to be arrogant about it and their direct download service honestly is easier than finding the goddamn disc all the time. The metrics and integration offered by their Steamworks thing would seemingly benefit everyone: Valve gets metrics on indie games, and I get metrics (OK, it's a text game, I'll more realistically get a metric) and I can push patches out and so forth. I don't care about piracy for my slop, but I guess if I were Inversion or someone, eliminating the zero-day warez release would be another benefit. But here's the thing - our lovely batch of game journalists got the press release from Valve, announced all the amazing features, and then completely went onto the next thing. Because they are all incompetent, none of them bothered to check out when it would be available, or what would be involved in setting it up, or - God forbid - a quick article on someone's attempts to actually use it. I don't blame Valve for announcing a product and then going into a complete media black hole about it for five months. I do blame the laughable state of the gaming press to not do an ounce of follow-up. Although, to be honest, I find them all reprehensible anyway. AudioSurf came out using Steamworks, so obviously someone was able to get through to them. Who knows. ICJ
