If you have a tolerance for Japanese TV, you should give this show a shot. Incompetent everyman gamer Arino is forced by his employers to defeat horrible, maddening, difficult, confusing or complicated games or suffer demotion and humiliation. What's funny about it is how bad this guy is at gaming (he fails over and over and over) and how ridiculously absurd some of the games are (all those games that were "too hard" for Americans). Despite this, he is affable and agreeable most of the time, like a witting foil for the games' cruel jokes. It's been going for about ten seasons now so I think it predates Angry Videogame Nerd and the like. I've probably been snooped a million times over since I first heard about it a year or more ago, but I recently found some subtitled episodes and enjoyed watching them. Particularly good is this episode where he takes on the Japanese Mario 2, and his assistants have to bust out the dry-erase board to diagram jumps for him. Later in the episode they bring in some kind of 14-year old savant who clears the game on one life and subtly takes digs at Arino's gaming prowess. I enjoyed watching it because of my taste for retro games, so keep that in mind before you try it. |
