Look okay so the thing is I'm secretly on the fence about how much fatties should be punished for being fat. I'd like to discuss this! I will open with the following faintly inflammatory statement: I think en-masse (heh heh) obesity is a result of several sociocultural and, in some cases, genetic pressures. It is difficult to legislate the things that contribute to making any individual person fat; it's relatively easy to legislate the kinds of social burden that the individual fatty must bear. So I think the tendency has been to look for solutions on the latter end rather than the former. But, honestly, I think ending corn, wheat, and milk subsidies, and drastically stepping up the authority and standards of production enforced by the USDA would be the best possible first step. Chips are fucking delicious, it is irrational to expect that anyone would willingly eat kale when they could have chips, except if kale was cheaper than chips. If it were possible to get kale in cute bags, clean, cut, and ready for snacking, and half the price of chips: that would be great. |
