Unless they're deathclaws, if they see you and you're not ready to fight them you are food. :(

The normal enclave guys might not be trouble to avoid or fight, they can be tuff but by the time I saw them I was all decked out in shitloads of ammo and etc.

Also deathclaws make that dart gun a necessity, because that poison cripples them so they can't run and charge at you, makes it a lot easier to fight and backpedal from them. I actually wasn't going to even bother making custom weapons, because a lot of them looked kind of useless (didn't want a flaming sword when I put all my stuff into guns guns guns), but a couple of them are really handy.
