I can get why you would want to trade an aging slugger, but Cubs fan seems to really be in favor of getting the guy the hell out of there. There aren't any Cub fans here, are there? My brother went to a Cubs game a few years ago and his take was that Sosa was pretty cherished. What happened to piss everyone off? Was it the cork or something more?

You knew it was a matter of time when he ran Mark Grace out. He liked to blare latin music in the locker room, and it chased off a lot of guys who weren't into it. I think that the season is like having to go on one of those team-building camping trips with the rappeling and the trust games, except they leave in February and they don't come back until October. Can you imagine having to listen to that much Julio Iglesias? Anyway Grace left years ago, in time to go win a World Series with the Dbacks, and Gammons talked about how it had been Grace's clubhouse, but it was Sosa's now, etc. They didn't win. They didn't surround Sosa with power bats so he'd see more fastballs. He hurt his back and played through it and it got worse, so his power dropped off even more. He corks his bat and then lies about it after, just completely blase about the whole thing. They hired Dusty Baker as manager and he's a complete fuckwit, every player in Chicago gets worse while he's managing, including Sosa, but Sosa's taking the blame for the team capping out. Their frontline starters are playoff-caliber but they never have enough power bats to do anything. It's not a sabermetric thing, they need to sign guys who can hit the ball out of parks other than Wrigley. Even when they have them they toss them, Dusty Baker no speakee Korean so Hee Sop Choi gets to spend the next 15 years smashing every low fastball he sees in someone else's laundry.

Anyway, Sosa's hoppy thing in the batter's box annoys the other team, his primadonna bullshit annoys his own team. So this year right around the end of the season someone smashes tha man's radio. This is the reason he's gone. The other players had had it so they took a bat to his radio. I figure it's like the soap-bars-wrapped-in-towels beating from Full Metal Jacket. He pulls a Randy Moss, leaving in the third inning of their final game at Wrigley, then lies about it, then sees they have videotape of him leaving, then lies some more, then fights the day's salary they docked him. He's also in a sharper decline than anyone cares to talk about, and his contract is killing them, since they have a good farm system and can bring up a few kids to even out the homers they'll lose.

Of course, Baker's still manager, so they'll suck anyway. I get to watch Sosa help the Orioles smack my home team into another 2nd place in the east wild card berth. Every year the Orioles suck, and every year they play like the 27 Yankees when the Sox come to town.
