SMT-Strange Journey is great by Lizard_King 04/11/2010, 2:17pm PDT
The plot is essentially Mountains of Madness style Lovecraft, with some digital Jules Verne sci fi thrown in, all layered into the mandatory SMT framework of Pokedemons. The dialogue and music are top notch, and refreshing in comparison to recent console JRPGs. The main feature is that while you are again tossed a bunch of stereotypes, they are anime action stereotypes rather than the molester hentai dreams of Final Fantasy. The plot and mechanics provide a good risk/reward ratio for exploration, and the upgrades available are all purposeful and interesting to track.

The combat is similar in some ways to what the previous SMT outing for DS, Devil Survivor, has, but it removes the faux strategic layer and focuses on a solid dungeon crawl. The crafting system is well rounded, the demon conversations are a great tactical option, and the trick to the combat (matching alignments for special attacks) seems interesting but may not wear well.

Apart from having unskippable cutscenes and no suspend option that I could find, it's knocked all of the other recent DS purchases into the back of the line. I was hoping to finish Infinite Space before that happened, but it looks like that game and M&M Clash of Heroes will have to wait for the summer.
