I met Tomonobu Itagaki, and he said I should go back to Japan because women don't respect men in Los Angeles. [This from a game developer sued for sexual harassment --Fussbett [found innocent though --Fussbett]] When I persevered and said I had to stay in America for a bit to work, he was so impressed he gave me his card and told me to contact him in Tokyo. It was a revelation for me about directing video games, since I realized Tomonobu was just hamming it up to the reporter, me, for the press it would garner, and I extended that to the entire job of directing games. After all, a director just tells other people what to do. Tomonobu is just a smart guy playing a character for the hype. (Subtext: any smart person could direct games, and I'm a smart person.) tl;dr -- Tomonobu Itagaki is just a competent implementer. I could be too.
