Web forum moderation is difficult to talk about. For the most part, the moderators are just as loathesome as the posters in need of that moderation. Take icycalm, as insomni.ac. He is an incredibly stupid, wretched individual. But who would willingly contribute to his forum? Bootlickers who deserve our scorn.
The same argument can be made for the forum at Something Awful. Anyone funny has been chased away years ago. But let's look at this thread in the comic book forum - "Funny panels of comics: RISE".
SA is readable only as a repository for image threads. (It's amusing that the place was made irrelevant by 4chan in many ways.) Now, most of the time, the comic book forum on SA is filled with screeching faggots. They will screech. The worst of nerds. But on page 75, someone posts an image about the comic book character Juggernaut destroying the World Trade Center, drawn by Todd MacFarlane.
Now, I'd link to the images in that thread, except the groupthink of SA demands that people use "waffleimages" as the host. Waffleimages-hosted content does not work on other websites. I mean, this is what we're up against, just trying to describe this: a terrible image host, screechy comic book nerds, a cocksmear like Todd MacFarlane, and a stupid character like the Juggernaut. I haven't even gotten to the moderator yet.
If you go to that link, you'll see that the images stop as people discuss Todd MacFarlane's attitude towards Marvel Comics. He was asked to redraw something because the Comics Code Authority says you can't draw swords hitting people in eyes or something. MacFarlane's website paints MacFarlane as this oppressed figure (the CCA was established in 1954!! Nothing in comics ought to be influenced by something so long ago! /draws the X-Men). This is slightly interesting. Believe me, I'd rather have found true love, but for a lazy Saturday morning that is mostly about fine bourbon and preserves, it's a little interesting to see some of the backstory on why the "biggest" artist of the 90s left Marvel. Or rather, why the biggest artist of the 90s felt he had to leave Marvel.
But here comes the moderator:
hermanos: Next six posts need funny panels or else I'm handing out probations.
It's just... astounding to see that post in the middle of the page. Adults are conversing like adults. Nobody is calling anyone a piece of shit. Nobody is trolling (gasp!). Nobody is even being screechy. Adults discussing a little piece of comic book history. HERE COMES POP TO SET THINGS STRAIGHT. The sheer faggotry that hermanos displays here is just breathtaking. And he does it throughout the entire thread. Any time people discuss anything in that thread, he threatens "probations." It's one of the most pathetic displays of chest beating on the Internet.
What self-respecting adult would submit to that? Who would fucking participate in a forum like that? That piece of shit should be skewered from head to toe for being a tedious cretin. But goons fall in line. Goons never changes.
Something Awful is the kind of web forum that makes you hate yourself for reading it, more than you hate any of the reprehensible manchildren contributing. |
