Both were stapled on to the plot at the last minute because none other than Dale Cooper's actor objected to having his character finally hook up with Audrey, who was supposed to be the person in peril at the end. He basically prima donnaed his way into a far shittier version of the plot that ensured a character no one gave a damn about kept showing up in key points and/or was utterly incomprehensible (in the case of Zane's mumbling). Maybe Twin Peaks is only supposed to be enjoyed with hipster irony as a shield, but it also had some really good acting and emotionally charged relationships in which it was easy to become invested, so this quick rewrite at the end ensures that the latter half of season 2 is much weaker than the rest of the product. I'm pretty sure Lynch losing control of the show is only partially intentional from lack of interest on his part. Of course, Dale went on to reject huge roles in favor of Showgirls, so I guess it's fair to say he got his just desserts.

I think Fire Walk With Me is absolutely worth it, even if it concentrates Lynch trolling to another level. Donna (always one of the non-actresses on the show, especially when multiplied by James) is played by a far better actress, James isn't in it at all, and Laura Palmer is awesome throughout. What more could you ask for? (begin list here)
