Plenty of Japanese games take place in stylized, sometimes idealized, fantasy versions of the modern world. Earthbound, Persona, Pokemon, Shenmue, Yakuza, The World Ends with You... even some of the newer Sonic games have begun integrating human cities. What was the last Western-developed title that depicted the world outside your window as anything other than a depressing shithole, full of jerks waiting to be mowed down with your car? Outside of licensed properties like The Simpsons and Spider-Man, I'm drawing a blank. Restore my faith in humanity, Caltrops, by helping me compile a list of positive portrayals of Western society in video games!
