Far Cry 2 tries to present a sandbox warzone like Mercenaries, but replaces that game's over the top destruction with ham-fisted attempts at immersion (Far Cry 2's idea of immersion being to make it realistically awkward to drive and read a map at the same time). Sometimes it works - the first time you run over a zebra, set a brush fire, or solve the puzzle of how to make every one of your weapons a grenade launcher are all memorable experiences - but the vast majority of the game finds you driving back and forth the same winding dirt road in the same shitbox car fighting the same five guys at each of Leboa-Sako's fifty-seven infinitely respawning military checkpoints. Every person in this game wants you dead and none of them has the first clue how to do it, but occasionally one of them will get lucky, forcing you to trek all the way back from the last save house. While I presume this accurately reflects daily life in a country where the greatest threat is mosquito-borne malaria, it's still not very fun. One star out of four.
PROTIP: Far Cry 2's concessions to realism are more about presentation than simulation. The developers go to the trouble of modelling a wide variety of real-world weapons, only to make a submachine gun like the Uzi and a full-power battle rifle like the HK G3 do the same amount of damage - an amount so miniscule that it takes multiple bursts to put down a single goblin in a t-shirt. Fortunately, headshots are always fatal, so keep your sidearm condition one and practice those Mozambique drills. 8( |
