I bought this. It was generally fun and worth the $2.50. I played on Hard and it was too hard for a chapter or two; then I got the heal spell and it was too easy for the rest of the game. But they never take away your ability to throw barrels or kick people off/into things so it never stopped being fun.
I did not find the melee to be as deep as Lugaru's, but that might be because I didn't fully explore it. I focused on defensive magic and took some melee and archery on the side, and the magic and archery each eventually gave me a game-breaking ability with infinite uses, while the melee mostly stayed the same. I never even had to learn how to fight the strongest swordy guys in the game as a non-invincible character. Just charm, watch them peck at each other for a while, charm again, uh oh that guy is coming better freeze him and kick him over the ledge, turn invincible, charm somebody else, mess up and die and reload and well it was fun, just playing around with medieval fighty dolls for several hours, with occasional restful pauses while I shot arrows at some big dumb boss that apparently was designed to be threatening only to melee characters.
The stages were annoyingly linear and scripty but the low-level fighting was dynamic enough to make up for that. The stupid "moral choice" element is stupid because it hinges on your feelings for characters and a world that you haven't really had a chance to get to know, but it's superficial enough that it doesn't really get in the way. Still, I would have liked to be able to choose to join the main antagonist's side, because he seemed to be the only guy around capable of speaking reasonably or accomplishing anything. I feel that after defeating the villain and watching the final cutscene I ought to have a fairly strong understanding of whether I actually improved things--it seemed to me that his plan was pretty good, albeit slightly genocidal or whatever. But for $2.50 I will take my HD orc-kicking and be grudgingly satisfied. |
