Details.
Honestly, I'm rating this game a guilty pleasure. Freespace 2 does flightstick space combat better (and is Xbox 360 controller compatible), and Space Rangers 2 does galaxy-spanning spaceship RPGs better. I would only say buy if you played and have fond memories of Elite, because nostalgia is the main selling point here.
The one thing I do like that I recently noticed is that while enemies scale to match your ship's "level," it's not just a case of upping their stats, the different types of ships begin to specialize in different tactics. The Ersatz-Klingons start packing multiple turrets and supershot charging weapons, the silly goggle-eyed bond-villain-voiced aliens start leaning on the afterburners and dropping mines, the bird aliens start using special drives to violently shift position, etc.
Again, the game's a piece of shit with mouse WASD. |
