And then the game opens up quite a bit more. Easily my game of the year so far. It's like a mix of Monster Hunter (items, crafting), Demon's Souls (general combat controls), Devil May Cry (flashier combat than DS), Elder Scrolls (setting), Final Fantasy Tactics (JOB SYSTEM!), and new shit it made up. In the demo, I think my tank tried to throw me onto the back of shit to GRAPPLE IT IN THE SKY. The followers also have what's probably the least annoying coop AI I've encountered, and practically zero pathing issues.

I really hated it at first because there was a ton to learn and it didn't really do that great a job of explaining itself so it just made the game really frustrating and hard. I was about level 12 before I remembered I could train skills because I was spending my time confusedly wandering around and dying and you have to visit a town to train. I also picked the Shadowfort quest as the first quest I did in Gran Soren without realizing that it's probably the most difficult in the game (that I've done so far) and that it was going to send you on a half a billion mile trek around the game world. I also had a fucked up party make-up at the time which made it even harder. So my biggest gripe is that if you don't immediately figure everything out and become good with the controls the game is pretty much ruthless. Particularly because it tends to throw, minimum, half a dozen enemies at you at one time, and if you wander too far while fighting them then another half-dozen will pile on. But once you get the skill system and the crafting and upgrading and pawn system and get comfortable with the controls, everything's pretty fun and the packs of enemies are more fun than randomly sparse landscapes with a bear here and there. One time I was fighting a pack of bandits at night and got fucking jacked by a chimaera that snuck up behind me in the darkness. Totally had no idea it was anywhere even close and then this big fucking lion head charges in and sends me flying.

My second biggest gripe is the fact that you can't reload a save unless you exit out to the title screen. But you CAN load from a separate checkpoint auto-save that's separate from your normal save. But the game also performs an auto-save that will overwrite your normal save file, so if you do decide to actually exit out and reload you're fucked because the game auto-saved you into the disaster you were trying to get out of.

My third biggest gripe is that the game needs a fucking fast-travel option earlier. I read there's one later but I haven't unlocked it yet apparently, and even then from the sounds of it I still have to walk to each ass-end of the map I would want to fast-travel to just so I can drop an item that will function as a teleport destination.

My fourth biggest gripe is the AI constantly repeating the same shit over and over again. "The road forks here. Perchance we should see where this path leads?" WE KNOW WHERE IT LEADS. WE'VE BEEN UP THIS PATH 10 TIMES. IT'S ON THE MAP. GOD.

Overall, I'm liking this game a lot now. Yesterday I got ambushed by a gryphon and one of my pawns played mountain goat to its golden eagle. I also love being able hoist enemies up over your shoulder and throw them off a cliff. And being able to hoist wandering pawns up over your shoulder and throw them off a cliff. Hope this game gets a sequel that smooths some things out and has co-op, so I can hoist other players up over my shoulder and throw them off a clfif.
