The original Planet of the Apes was born out of televisual genius Rod Serling's desire to mock creationists by doing the Scopes Monkey Trial in reverse, using actual monkeys. If there was any intention behind making the monkeys in Rise of the Planet of the Apes the result of intelligent design, it was so muddled and misguided as to cause even James Franco to furrow his brow in compassionate confusion.

Also, the special effects were unconvincing.
