The input technology works shockingly well considering it's just based on a normal guitar output, but using the guitar's out as your in-game sound also introduces a fucking irritating amount of lag. In the post-CRT era, you can't get away with this. My other major issue is that my good guitar's output level is too low to be used by the game, even with the humbucker selected (double coil, hotter output than single coil pickups). I snapped my high E string using the in-game tuner (running through the in-game tuner is required before play) because it wasn't being picked up and the tuner just kept goading "higher!". I should have realized this sooner, but I'd thought the guitar had just gone radically out of tune during its long spell on the rack. The rock band pro guitar worked fine the first time, though.
The game itself is interesting in that it automatically adjusts what notes you're playing on the fly based on how well you're doing. I generally liked it, but it's very frustrating when you almost have something and they dumb it back down for you. The game is actually pretty decent, but I prefer Rock Bands pro guitar mode. You can't beat having a guitar wired up to display what your fingers are actually fretting.
Verdict: buy it if you have a guitar sitting around and don't want to blow money on the full Rock Band pro guitar. |
