Maybe the reason wasn't good enough, but I don't believe it was entirely gratuitous. Braid's a puzzle game. It's also a game about puzzles. It's actually about more than one thing, but if you wanted to reduce the meaning of its stories to a simple message, one of them could be "The kind of person who treats the world as a puzzle to be solved can do a great deal of harm - to the world, to himself, to his relationships." And in light of that, I think the story of Braid is itself meant to be a puzzle. You need to work to piece together its meaning. It's disjointed, postmodern and weird in the name of ludonarrative harmony.
