There's only so much you can say about games that haven't EVEN come out yet. You can talk about the graphics and the stories, but until every game is Geometry Wars, you won't be able to do that without mentioning the ways in which they depict male and (sometimes) female characters. You can talk about the creatives who make games and the players who consume them but, again, you're going to run headlong into a brick wall of gendered entities. It would be nice if games journalists could actually talk about the games themselves, but that would require waiting until the games are finished and playable, at which point no one cares anymore because they could just download the demo and learn more in five minutes than John Walker could tell them in 5000 words. Release day is the point where journalism passes the baton to scholarly writing, reporters are replaced by experts, and something of value can finally be produced.
tl;dr If you're looking for worthwhile writing about games, a news blog is the wrong fucking place. Maybe try a critical blog instead, or even a web forum? |
