I never got into the anime club at college because they were fat pasty losers. Actually it was because they couldn't keep up with the new releases as fast as I did. But my brother has a girlfriend now who used to live in Japan and I don't need to fill in the rest. They went to an actual anime club meeting. His verdict was that they were not so much fat pasty losers as much as they were greasy pasty scary losers who were only occasionally fat. They were having a 7-hour MARATHON SHOWING of the complete "Elfen Lied", which is sort of like Love Hina/generic harem show meets the scary psychic kids from Akira. Bro's report was that the first thing to happen was everyone whipped out Pocky, straight up, and a variety of other ridiculous snacks from the giant local Japanese grocery store, and they flipped on the TV and the couples got together to start dimly-lit groping. Oh god. And then and then they actually watched the whole thing! They cried! And laughed! The girls, who should have been intellectually offended by the idiocy of the show, aesthetically offended by the lack of production quality as compared to earlier and/or better shows, and emotionally offended by the third-rate jack-off weenie exploitation of their fellow females, picked favorites and widdled about which girl they were most like. Oh retarded! Bro left after the third episode and did not score.
