Nothing new here. Howard Cosell, in one of his books, said (not as graphically) essentially the same thing about sports journalism at least 20 years ago, that supposed reporters of sports-related news are mostly fanboys of the particular team - or the sports figure for non-team sports like boxing - and are far too lazy to do the kind of real and substantial in-depth reporting that regular beat reporters do (or at least, did then) as a matter of course.
So reporters or news outlets being practically in bed with the people they're supposed to investigate is nothing new.
