It's not better than World of Warcraft, and isn't compelling or innovative in any way. There is literally nothing new here and nothing you don't already get - and better - elsewhere.
The game defaults to third person over the right shoulder, but you can change it to first person. It doesn't have hit boxes on the enemies so it's no different from any other Everquest-derived thing. The attacks take forever so you mostly keep yourself oriented towards the enemy while trying to step out of their attack area so your attack can finally occur. Each team gets access to three races (in the beta) so you get locked into one of those three if you want to play with your friends. The classes and levels and races and such have skills named after some of the weapons skills in the other Elder Scrolls games, you get nothing but more of the same play control and combat out of it.
Guild Wars 2 is better than World of Warcraft by a pretty good margin, and is better than this by a pretty good margin due to game design, graphics and class differentiation that makes playing a bunch of characters worth it. Good enough I played it for about 5 months, almost as long as I played Eve the second time (the other two were shorter).
For Elder Scrolls Online, though: boring, same-y and "merely competent" just isn't going to do it. This was a total waste of resources and when the survey came out after the weekend everyone responded "yeah seems ok" until you get to the "I would buy this game agree/disagree" where everyone said hell no, because there's nothing there worth any of your money or time.
