Leigh Alexander will never play The Castle Doctrine by The Warezwolf 07/24/2013, 4:34pm PDT
http://thiscageisworms.com/2013/07/24/on-why-i-will-never-play-the-castle-doctrine/

Jason Rohrer wrote a game about home invasions. This is GOOD. It was an original idea with unique game-play elements. We need more games like this.

Leigh Alexander is not going to play it and wants to tell you why. She also wants you to never play it, too. Rohrer probably welcomes a discussion on castle doctrine laws, gun control and the state of nuclear families. But we're not really having a discussion here, we're telling people that you "shouldn't" play a game that makes you uncomfortable. For all the crying that the gaming press does about games that don't mean anything, as soon as something comes out deeper than a fighting game or bisexual RPG, they want it to remain forever unplayed.

Alexander thinks that when someone breaks into your house, you can yell at them and their eyebrows will go wide as they realize their faux pas and they will then leave. Clearly this works, because there has never been a hot prowl burglary that resulted in murder or rape except for when it happens to the deaf and mute. I feel that this robot could be programmed to say, "Please leave our homes!" and it would eliminate home invasions completely. Maybe we could even get Jeph Jacques to line-read an apology for it. Do mute people WANT to get raped and murdered??

I disagree with Alexander on the political issues of shooting people in your house, but that's just a difference in ideology and we are each entitled to our own opinions.

Onward from there...

For Rohrer, the person who could break into your home and steal your things is the worst kind of media villain that we’ve been trained to be afraid of. This person is coming into your home to take everything that you love, and more than that, he is going to murder your entire family and hide them in the attic. This doesn’t seem to be upheld by actual crime statistics, however, especially here in Atlanta, which is the sixth most dangerous city in America as of 2012. Apparently, in 2011 there were 7,499 burglaries in Atlanta–that’s the classic model of home invasion that Rohrer is fantasizing about, which is where a person comes into your home, steals your Xbox, and runs away while you’re out at WalMart or whatever. Against that, in the same year there were 88 murders.

Atlanta has fuck-all to do with anything. Rohrer lives in New Mexico. However, this line -- that’s the classic model of home invasion that Rohrer is fantasizing about, which is where a person comes into your home, steals your Xbox, and runs away while you’re out -- I don't mean to pick nits and I haven't played The Castle Doctrine yet, but I am pretty sure the fucking point of the game is that your family IS FUCKING THERE during the burglary.

"This thing that is not the game that exists is wrong about this thing not in the game."

]Playing through a simulation of Rohrer’s safety and unsafety elides over the fact that there are so many subject positions in the United States whose baseline states of safety are far below Roher’s baseline safety level. Rohrer won’t be murdered for holding hands with his partner in public.

I do like this part where Alexander insinuates that Rohrer's fear for his family's life ought to be PSSSHED because gay people sometimes literally get bashed. Any time a gay couple fears for their lives, they can let go of each other's hands for five minutes as they walk through the Gauntlet level of gay-bashers that she has them in. If I can totally make an assumption: Rohrer probably found himself in a neighborhood that suddenly got shitty with a house he was underwater in. This isn't a fucking white male dad privilege privilege privilege tumblr.com/death-threat-to-Gabe-and-Tycho #firstworldproblem. This is a real thing happening to real people everywhere. You can't exactly walk away from that shit without destroying your credit or moving your kids into an apartment and getting rid of the family dog. This is a real-life problem that has no place in the social justice world that revolves around trying to make people put asterisks on words without leaving one's bed. I know that the concept of destroying your credit through a short sale is far beyond the life experience of social justice types, but the insinuation is that people with financial and socio-economic problems can't make games about them because other people are suffering more.

(These other people won't learn the tools of cis opression like Python or Javascript, so we honestly have an article here that essentially advocates the creation of no new games.)

I guess the other thing that I would like to say has less to do with the article and game, but more with what would really happen afterwards. If a guy found out that his nagging wife and fat, ugly children were murdered by a lunatic, he wouldn't turn into the Punisher. Rather, he'd become the happiest man in the world. He could eat curries, get the haircut he wants and play computer games each night. In fact, there should be a comic book vigilante that slips away from the nightmare of his home life each evening, only to retire from it all once his arch-nemesis kills his bitchy wife and stupid children.

We need more games that create interesting discussions. I hate that the one long-form article I've seen about this game is inane whining about how nobody should play it and how pathetic it is that the man of the household does the defending, like we should arm fucking kids or give the wife a rocket launcher while dad hides under the covers reading Pinterest. Come the fuck on. I've dated girls that get visibly frustrated over what a bag of apathy I am if she scans the grocery store receipt, sees I got charged twice for the discount Drano and don't immediately walk back in and punch out the cashier. Thinking that mom should have an equal opportunity to to lob grenades at Richard Ramirez and then dinging the game for it is fucking retarded.

All right my work is done here
