| Have a look yourself, they only managed about twenty paragraphs.
It's an ensemble piece, it has a good chorus of fearing terrorists and high notes of attacks on Israel, the UN folding like the League of Nations, and nuclear proliferation complete with use of key phrases like 'the bomb.' The punks in the Russian foreign ministry must have really pushed those when they were lubing up to give their supervisors the ride of their lives. I'm hoping for encores, especially if 'Putin' ignores his Georgian intervention this hard in the next round, but every hipster from here to Scotland is just going to wet themselves from the irony of seeing Russia demand US restraint in a newspaper, as if sensible American public discourse is alive and kicking. All the NY times need to manage in order to actually do some good here is wheel out the corpse of a respected member of Cold War era America's intelligentsia to complete the performance, say Norman Mailer 'cause he had some awareness of social pressures, and the hipsters might all die laughing. Of fucking course he compares the US to Nazis by the third paragraph, and there's a tone of soviet-style equality: "the exceptional are dangerous, fear different people, the God I've loved all along despite my atheist career under Soviet power tells me so.' And of course the blithe disregard for reality and chicken-little nonsense are in there. But what has me so amused is that not only is a card-carrying member of the Enforced Atheism Red Threat trying to put the fear of God and the Red Threat into the allegedly liberal NYT readership, the Times chose to print this incendiary shit today because how else you gonna spice up terrorist remembrance. |
