Wonderful 101 first impressionsby Rafiki 09/18/2013, 12:39pm PDT
This game is nuts. It's just non-stop action and combat and explosions and things blowing up and falling apart. Here's a video of level 2. There's about 5 minutes of basic combat at the start, then at the 5 minute mark the level blows up, and then at the 8 minute mark there's a boss fight. The person playing that "walkthrough" kind of sucks so it's a little aggravating to watch, but the other walkthough on Youtube has a relentlessly awful and WACKY narrator.
SO FAR: I'm not sure if I like the game yet. I have the same problem as reviewers: the game explains just about nothing. The game is clearly in love with the 1980s where games would just throw you to the wolves and expect you to figure it out or go fuck yourself, but those games were either simpler so it was fairly easy to figure out or they had some complexity and it fucking sucked. I hate overbearing tutorials (Witcher 2 is the WORST), but I just want something to explain some basics. It gives you a very, very basic explanation of controls (pressing this button does ________), but that's about it. You recruit random civilians and turn them into superheroes to fight with you, and the more citizens you have you can either launch more powerful attacks or more simultaneous attacks. Every once in awhile I'll recruit someone and it'll interrupt the game to announce that this is some kind of special recruit, but I have no idea what it means or how it affects the game. I read that you can actually switch to these characters, but I've yet to find any button or menu item that allows it. Switching between the lead characters is easy (use their power), but the secondary ones are a complete mystery. This is bullshit! I don't care if you don't hold my hand and explain every minor detail and strategy against every enemy, but at least explain the basic features, goddamn. I also have no idea what unlocks super powers. Every once in awhile I'll be interrupted by a notice that I earned a new power. No idea how or why.
At the start, "Normal" is the highest difficulty. I've died 2-3 times in 4 levels, and largely kind of spammed my way through things. When you die, you just respawn at the latest checkpoint. In that respect, the game isn't very difficult. However, each level is broken up into sections and you get graded on each section based on how fast you complete it, I think how many consecutive hits you get (it's referred to as "Combo") without being interrupted, and how much damage you take. In that respect, the game is brutally and unapologetically hard right off the bat, and there's an extra Hard mode after you complete it.
I'm not sure if I like it yet because I'm not sure if it's trying to trick me into believing it has more depth than it really does and using the cartoony action to distract me from noticing. Since I still don't completely understand the game, I still don't know if there's a deeper strategy to getting the best score or if I could mostly just button mash my way to perfection.
I do like its huge throwback to the 80s in that it has tons of secrets hidden everywhere. You can uncover hidden items all over the place, and the game also has a bunch of hidden sections to find. On level 1, randomly backtracking to an area you just cleared unlocks a secret mission. It's #49. Since I haven't found any other ones yet, I don't know if that number is mostly arbitrary, if the hidden missions are numbered out of order, or if there really are 48 other secret missions on the first level alone.
At any rate, I still want to keep playing because it's sucking the dick on my heart that loves arcade games. Hopefully when I figure everything out the game turns out to be awesome instead of a big stupid letdown.
