I think that's been the goal all along to downplay the actual playing of games and upsell the buying alone. That's why you keep seeing cross game promotions. Sure there's a partial sense of innocent fun to it, but there's the underlying theme of people who buy the cereal for the toy. It's just so much easier to move digital products and the whole thing ends up protected by the paradoxical statements of "If you don't like it, don't buy it" and "Buy everything", the resolution of this by most gamers ends up being "If you don't like it, don't play it, but still buy it".
Everyone is a sycophant. You'll constantly see some poster on any MMO forum clamoring that he only has a half hour a day to play, the solution isn't that he just find different games, but that the product cater to him so much that it's ruined, then he finally can just pay for it and barely play it. Maybe I really am too fucking cynical. |
