Anyone trying this? The makers of Heroes of Newerth know that game is fucked, so they're making a new game and desperately trying to brand it as "the 2nd generation of MOBAs".
It's actually not half bad. The art is the exact polar opposite of HoN: bright, colorful, with everything standing out and easy to tell apart. In fact the visuals are so eye pleasing, that it's as far above LoL as LoL was above HoN.
There's little need to ever go back to base anymore. Everyone gets an invincible courier and you don't have to control it anymore, just buy shit out in the field and hit a single hotkey for the courier to deliver everything to you. If you're out of combat for 10 seconds you start regenerating health and mana like crazy. It works better than it sounds.
Competition amongst teammates is cut. The whole team receives gold from every last hit, and kill bounties are evenly split between everyone who assited.
Maybe the strangest change is they combined attack damage and ability power into a single stat, power. It has the sort of neat effect of freeing you from being locked into one role with each hero. Items are pretty much divided between offense, defense, and utility. Someone loaded with power is going to hit hard with both spells and auto attacking. The heroes with steroid abilities will still be better as attack carriers, but the "mages" now pack considerable dps to keep them from becoming irreverent.
They made the ultimate boss creep a lot more fun. If you kill it, a giant king kong monster breaks free and will spawn at your base to push a lane in 30 seconds. The team votes on which lane, and the fucker is set loose. Everyone advances behind the giant damage sponge wrecking ball as it chucks boulders and leaps to tear apart turrets.
Best of all, it's new enough that the pro assholes haven't ruined it yet. Everyone is relatively nice, and anyone can go any lane without some asshole shouting about the META. 2 mid, 2 top, 1 bot? Sure!
Worth checking out if you're into the genre. I think you only have until Sunday to sign up. |
