In the desert of the 2000s there were so many times you could replay TLJ or Syberia. Everyone got used to badly translated European or indie releases or AGS freeware. There were some good games released at this time, mostly the free ones by the AGS users, but otherwise you just had to tolerate terrible games or play other genres (it's how I got into RPGs and dabbled with IF). It doesn't help that most adventure review sites have gone to shit even though the genre has experienced a small revival. The Adventuregamers 2013 awards are funny. Gone Home swept the Editor's Awards but didn't win a single Reader's Choice Award (which was dominated by Cognition). I've heard Cognition is uneven but at least it actually has puzzles. Like most humor that is now irrelevant, cat-moustache puzzles are referred to affectionately or jokingly by most adventure gamers. There's more FAQ sites than anyone will ever need and many games now have hint mechanics built in. I'll take a few puzzles that strain logic than a walking stimulator plus/minus quicktime events. |
