My impression of indie games is that you need to keep churning them out, in hopes one will be successful. At least if you want to make a living off it. It's kind of like with cell phone games. Graphics are also a big deal for the mass market... they will always judge a book by its cover. It was ever thus. Of course, if you just want to get a cult following, like with IFComp, you don't have to worry about that...

Hardware sucks. It's kind of cool to have a physical board that does something, but what they don't tell you is that half the time, it just doesn't work and you have to diagnose. It's the same as building your own PC. It's a fun concept, but in practice you plug something in backwards and spend an hour trying to figure out why it doesn't power on.

Five blocks could be a lot or a little, depending on how huge block sizes are in your town. A lot of newer US towns have enormous block sizes. Luckily, there is an invention... let's call it "IT"... that can transport you those few blocks without undue hassle and expense. No, it's not a Segway... it's better than that, since it doesn't require a battery. The bad news is, you'll need spandex pants and one of those plastic helmets to get the best use out of this two-wheeled contraption.
