The movie had a wide appeal but it was clearly targeted to the young male demographic.

Ghostbusters is an absurdist comedy of errors about the follies of starting your own small business.

From the life-changing event that kicks off the attempt (being fired) to getting the venture capital (mortgaging Ray's house) to the initial slow months (any calls?) to the hesitant first customer (Sigourney) to success (montage) to dealing with government bureaucracy sticking its big nose into your affairs once you start to see some success (Walter Peck) to the fantasy ending of your mom & pop startup saving the world.

What kid would get the humor behind "Everybody has 3 mortgages these days?" Or "The franchise rights alone will make us rich?" Let alone the ghost blowjob scene.
