They didn't have Starship Troopers when I was a kid, but I made my parents buy me a RoboCop comic book before I could EVEN read because I loved the movie so much. Total Recall came out when I was six, and by that point a collaboration between the director of RoboCop and the star of The Terminator was exactly the movie six-year-old me would've greenlighted if he had that kind of power. They would've been pitching it to me like "well we've got this three-titted space hooker" and I would've been like "good, good, but is there some way you could put Arnold behind the controls of one of those drilling machines Bebop and Rocksteady use on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but instead of drilling his way up from the Technodrome he drills right through a human being?" and they would've been like "hmm, we'll have to get back to you on that one, in the meantime check out these storyboards we've put together of him shoving this metal rod so far up his nose it touches his brain."
Give kids some credit. All the best kids movies do! When I was ten years old my favourite show was Seinfeld, and I bet yours was something similar (The Simpsons, maybe?). We didn't get every joke - George was singing MacArthur Park in the story he told? My dad: "old Richard Harris song - to the tune of Jurassic Park" - but we got a solid 90%. If a ten-year-old still doesn't understand how a mortgage or a blowjob or the EPA works on at least a cable news level, he's probably retarded. |
